It was a bumpy road to the grand final of the Beef Australia 2018 Young Farmers' Challenge, but ‘Just Carving Up’ overcame the challenges to take home top honours.
With commitment issues rendering one team member unable to participate, the team brought in a last minute substitute who may have been the key to their success.
Ben Ramsey, Rene Schipper, Riley Moller and Guth Maynard, got off to a strong start and were even luckier when their competitors, The Southport School (TSS), fumbled in the early stages. TSS looked to be making a comeback half way through the challenge, but Just Carving Up stormed home for the win.
Team spokesperson for ‘Just Carving Up’, Guth Maynard, Jambin, said although it was the first time the team had competed together, their strengths combined well to meet the demands of the competition.
"It would have been nice to fit in two training sessions per week in the lead up to tonight but timing just didn't work in our favour," he said.
"Luckily we are all involved in the beef industry in one way or another so we were able to construct a solid game plan."
The boys were pretty chuffed with their efforts, even going so far as to say they achieved a personal best time.
However, they did say they would have liked to see more teams enter the ring to boost the competition.
"We'll be back next time to defend our title,” Guth said.
“It's a great competition to be part of so we'll aim to improve our team connection and make our families proud."
