The showing may have been small, but the quality was unmistakable in the Dexter ring at Beef Australia 2018.
With only one exhibit, it was obvious that Laverty Stud’s Laverty Little Miss would take out the Grand Champion Female title, but judge Martin Lill, NSW, said it was great to see a quality cow in the ring.
“She’s a female that moves around the ring wonderfully,” Mr Lill said.
“She’s structurally correct and I’ve got a lot of respect for this female.
“It’s such a shame that there's just the one exhibit.”
Mr Lill also made not of the tremendous job the cow is doing on her calf.
“She's a female that is in the reproductive stages of her life and doing a fantastic job,” he said.
“That's really what we're asking for in these miniature breeds.”
“A lot of people don't know enough about them and probably pass judgement a little too quickly.
“Dexter’s are a true dual-purpose breed and they're really developed for a specific purpose.”
Laverty Stud owner Terry Young said it was fantastic to be recognised for the quality of their animal.
“We’re very excited to be here, but it would be nice to see more competitors,” he said.
At present, Laverty Stud has 14 Dexters and Bronwyn Young said they hoped to continue breeding them and would market them using their size as a draw-card.
“We're going to market them to smaller farms because we come from an area where they're all smaller farms,” Mrs Young said.
