A new arrival to the Australian insurance arena, Achmea Australia is offering innovative products to producers.


One of Australia’s most innovative new arrivals to the farm insurance market, Achmea Australia showcased its ongoing commitment to keeping farmers farming at Beef Australia 2018.

Achmea was established in the Netherlands more than 200 years ago when 39 farmers put money into a glass jar, to be compensated in the event one of them had a haystack fire. Those 39 farmers worked to support each other and minimise the collective risks and threats to their farms – and that same mutual approach to insurance remains alive and well in Achmea Australia today.

As a metaphor for the company’s aspirations, the “glass jar” represents the spirit of transparency, co-operation and partnership that continues to drive the company. Today, Achmea Australia remains committed to the mutual philosophy of its founding farmers, and it’s become the driving force behind the organisation’s focus on reducing risk, not just insuring against it.

A range of initiatives kicked off in February with Achmea Australia announcing a three-year partnership with Angus Australia to create a program designed to support the future leaders of Australia’s beef and agricultural industries. The GenAngus Future Leaders program mentors young entrepreneurs seeking to advance their knowledge and skills.

“This initiative should be seen as a sign of Achmea Australia’s commitment to the future leadership of the agricultural industry and our vision to protect and enhance agricultural communities across Australia,” said Achmea Australia chief executive officer Emma Thomas. 

Working with Angus Australia, Achmea Australia also recently launched its new stud stock insurance product.

“For producers who buy registered stud bulls and cows we offer three levels of stud stock insurance,” Mrs Thomas said. “And with stud bull and cow prices constantly fluctuating it’s important for producers to insure these high value assets.”

Achmea Australia’s stud stock insurance is highly competitive in the market, providing buyers with transparent insurance with a choice of one-, two- or three-star cover.

The levels of cover include ‘Mortality only’, ‘Mortality including accidental loss of use’, and ‘Mortality including accidental loss of use, sickness and disease.’

All three levels also include transit cover.

For Mrs Thomas, Achmea Australia’s attendance at Beef Australia was an opportunity to create greater awareness of what’s already proving to be a popular insurance choice for beef producers.
