Queensland’s Moongool Charolais stud has been awarded the prestigious Sydney Royal Show’s Interbreed Champion Beef Breeders Group.
There was strong competition between the European and British cattle breeds, but judges finally settled on Ivan Price’s Charolais breeders group and also gave the stud its first Sydney Royal Show Interbreed win.
Interbreed judge Gerald Spry, Wagga Wagga said the Moongool Charolais breeder group displayed a strong commercial cattle focus, which he noted as extremely important for any seed stock cattle stud.
“The Charolais group are medium in their frame with sound structure and easy doing types,” Mr Spry said.
“I believe this Charolais breeders group have all the important traits of commercially focused cattle, plus they are more suited to terminal beef cattle production.”
Mr Price’s Moongool Charolais team tipped out Poll Hereford breeders group, Kanimbla Livestock, Holbrook, New South Wales who was awarded Reserve Champion Interbreed Beef Breeders Group at Sydney Royal Show on Monday.
The Interbreed competition requires an exhibitor to show three animals from both sexes who have won champion titles.
“The top two cattle breeder groups are very commercially focused with structurally sound cattle, medium in frame size and I believe suited to most Australian beef markets,” Mr Spry said.
“I would like to see the show ring get a lot closer to the commercial cattle industry.”
Mr Price’s bull that lead the champion Charolais breeders group was by Temana Golden Logie, who won Sydney Royal Show’s grand champion Charolais bull three years ago. The other two females in the group had calves at foot with one a granddaughter of New Zealand bull Silverstream Evolution, who produce the $83,000 highest priced Charolais bull sold in Australia, while the the other cow was a daughter of Advance Dozer with calf at foot by Golden Logie.
“It’s a great honour to achieve a high level among such a quality group of cattle,” Mr Price said.
Moongool Charolais stud also won Grand champion Charolais cow at Sydney Royal Show judging on Saturday with 34-month-old Moongool Fanmail Eight with an eight-month-old calf by Golden Logie at foot. Plus, reserve junior Charolais champion female with 14-month-old Moongool Oregan, reserve champion Charolais female with Moongool Thyphen, and reserve champion Charolais junior bull with 17-month-old Moongool Monopoly who is a son of Temana Golden Logie.
