Rugby kicked off on the Darling Downs at the weekend.
Round 1 of the Wagners Risdon Cup saw USQ Saints take on the Goondiwindi Emu’s in the game of the round. In USQ’s 50th year the side was looking to start the year off on a flyer against the always dominant Emus, however the stalwart Goondiwindi side showed their class with Jack Webster, Levi Power and Will Gilbert best on field. Tom Jobling, Harry Hawker and George Stacey all scored doubles and showed how dangerous the Emus backline will be this year. Goondiwindi too good for USQ at home winning 52-7.
Highfields have had another tough start to the season but were looking promising at times and got a try on the board but Rangers were too good with Nick Leggat showing his strength throughout the game and flankers Frazier Donaldson and Stu Bougoure clinical in their sides dominant performance. Highfields Captain Blake Parton was a true leader and led the way for his troops but Rangers were too good and came away 76-7 victor’s over a new Highfields side.
The reigning Premiers have brought their success across from last season and put in another dominant performance early on in the season. The game looked to be in an arm wrestle with Dalby putting on an early storm in the Bears 22 but a young Bears side weathered the storm and work their way down the other end. The nil all deadlock broke 20 minutes in with Dalby scoring their first which opened up the flood gates for the reigning premiers as they went onto pile 61 points on the board. Bears looked promising at times but couldn’t match it with a classy Dalby side going down 61-7 at John Ritter Oval.
