A GROUP 1 quinella in Sydney and a Listed winner at the Gold Coast last Saturday, March 17, is a powerful reminder of the potency of the stallion roster at Aquis Farm, Canungra on the Gold Coast hinterland.
Feature race at Rosehill in Sydney was the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) for fillies and mares with Daysee Doom and Oregon’s Day providing a quinella for Red Ransom’s Group 2 Silver Slipper winning son Domesday who has just completed his second book of mares at Aquis Farm.
Last August Aquis Farm acquiring naming rights to the Gold Coast track so it was appropriate that the Listed Goldmarket Quality (1200m) was Raido – progeny of another Aquis Farm stallion acquisition Husson (Arg) who arrived at Aquis Farm for the 2017 season.
Daysee Doom is the fourth Group 1 winner by Domesday – another notable being last season’s Queensland Derby winner Ruthven now racing successfully in Hong Kong.
Not only did Daysee Doom boost her value significantly with her maiden top-flight success, she also joined the millionaires club in advancing her record to nine wins (including the Gr2 Vinery Stud Millie Fox Stakes, Gr2 Golden Pendant and Gr3 Dark Jewel Classic) and five placings (including the Gr2 ATC Millie Fox Stakes, Gr2 ATC Emancipation Stakes and Gr3 Angst Stakes) from 19 starts for $1,174,575 in earnings.
Trainer Ron Quinton, who celebrated his third Coolmore victory as a trainer following the wins of Ofcourseican in 2012 and Peeping in 2016, also won the race twice as a jockey on Miss Personality and Emancipation.
A 5YO mare, Daysee Doom is the only living foal of the winning Mister C (USA) mare See A Victory. Daysee Doom was her only runner as unfortunately both the broodmare and her filly foal by Street Boss died within a few days of each other the following season.
Runner-up Oregon’s Day is a 4YO mare from the Oregon (USA) mare Oregon Seal (NZ). Trained in Melbourne by Mick Price, Oregon’s Day has won three times including the Group 3 Alexandra Stakes at Moonee Valley and the Listed Redoute’s Choice Stakes at Caulfield.
Daysee Doom and Oregon’s Day were both conceived when Domesday was based at Darley Stud in NSW. Since moving to Aquis Farm as a foundation sire two seasons ago he’s covered books of 104 mares in 2016 and 141 mares in 2017 at an $8800 service fee.
Husson sires another black type winner
ANOTHER stallion at Aquis farm with Group 1 winning progeny is Husson – himself a three time Group 1 winner in Argentina.
Husson started his career at Patinack Farm, but was based with Vinery Stud in the Hunter Valley in recent years until moving to Aquis Farm for the 2017 season where he served a book of 91 mares.
Husson’s most notable progeny has been dual Group 1 and Magic Millions Cup winner Lucky Hussler – one of 16 black type winners for the son of Hussonet. The latest to join the list is 6YO gelding Raido who won the Listed Goldmarket Handicap (1200m) at the Gold Coast on Saturday, March 17.
A $40,000 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale buy from Korilya Stud, Raido is from the three time Perth winning Royal Academy mare Misguiding. Trained by Tony Gollan, Raido is now a seven time winner and has earned his connections almost $300,000.
Another feature race at the Gold Coast, the $100,000 Gold Coast Stakes (1800m), was won by progressive middle distance performer Doubt Defying. The four-year-old gelded son of Not a Single Doubt, who cost his Aquis Farm connections $45,000 at the 2015 Gold Coast Yearling Sale, has won his past three races. Doubt Defying, who is from the Black Opal Stakes winner Sarthemare, is trained at Eagle Farm by Steven O'Dea.
Spirit of Boom phenomenon
THE Gold Coast hosted its inaugural QTIS Jewel race day on Saturday, March 17 with two and three-year-olds racing for big prizes on the eve of this year's Gold Coast March Yearling Sale.
The Spirit of Boom phenomenon continued when his two juveniles Boomsara and Plumaro filled the first two placings respectively in the $250,000 QTIS 2YO Jewel (1200m).
A $45,000 Gold Coast March Yearling Sale buy for Munce Racing, 2YO gelding Boomsara is now the winner of two races from four starts and his earnings have raced to over $174,000. He is from the Tsuimai mare Passara while runner up Plumaro trained by Toowoomba-based Kevin Kemp is a daughter of the Red Dazzler mare Plumage.
Spirit of Boom's other runner on Saturday was 2YO filly Legal Ties who won her second race at Rockhampton for trainer Lyle Rowe – great news for the team from Eureka Stud and other breeders with progeny on offer at the Gold Coast sale.
Sista Act made it three wins from four runs this preparation when she scored a dashing win in the $125,000 QTIS 3YO Jewel (1200m) later in the afternoon. By Doomben Ten Thousand winner Falvelon from the Barely A Moment mare No Time, Sista Act was a $40,000 buy for trainer Liam Birchley from the Fig Tree Thoroughbreds draft at the 2016 Gold Coast March Yearling Sale.
Classic winner Power to stand in Queensland
EUROPEAN Classic winner and proven stakes sire Power will boost the Queensland sire ranks when he joins the roster at Oaklands Stud this spring.
In a deal brokered by Magic Millions, Power will head to the Toowoomba-based property in 2018 and give breeders the opportunity to breed to the outstanding son of champion sire Oasis Dream.
Power was an outstanding racehorse with five wins – including two at Group 1 level – and two runner-up placings from just nine starts before being retired to stud. A high class 2YO with wins in the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh in Ireland and Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot among his early accomplishments, the quality colt trained on at three to win the Group 1 Irish Two Thousand Guineas.
Power is one of two Group 1 winners produced by the winning Inchinor mare Frappe (Ire) – other being the Galileo filly Curvy who is a Group 1 winner in Canada. Frappe in turn is a half-sister to two Group 1 victors – English Two Thousand Guineas winner Footstepsinthesand and Irish Phoenix Stakes winner Pedro The Great.
“We are delighted to be able to secure such a world class galloper and exciting young sire to stand in Queensland. Already his progeny are showing great signs. They have proven popular in the sales ring and he was crowned the Leading First Season sire of 2016-17 in New Zealand,” Oaklands Stud owner Neville Stewart said.
As a young sire Power has already been represented by 61 winners including the stakes winners Gift of Power, Peace Envoy, Pleaseletmewin, Biz Power and Cristal Fizz.
Power will stand his first season in Australia at a fee of $11,000 (inc GST). For further information please contact Neville Stewart on 0418 718 011.
