The buzz is building among horse racing enthusiasts for the 2018 Capricornia Yearling Sale (CYS) being held on Sunday, April 8, in the Robert Schwarten Indoor Pavilion at the Rockhampton Showgrounds from 11am.
CYS convenor Jeff Leaver said the 113 lots selected for this year’s sale form one of the strongest drafts in recent times.
“We have 106 lots that are QTIS eligible this year which is a record,” Mr Leaver said.
“QTIS is certainly the good news story for the Queensland racing industry at present. It puts sizeable bonuses into owners pockets for two and three year-old racing, and has enabled studs to upgrade their stallion roster in Queensland over the last five years,” he said.
He said the end result is that the overall quality of yearlings is improving year after year.
“Our sale reflects that trend, the pedigrees on offer in our catalogue are the best I have seen in recent years and the spread of quality stallions will cater for most buyers.”

The Mayor’s Plate Race Day will be held later at Callaghan Park, and will be followed by The Ladbrokes 2YO Classic Race Calcutta Dinner at the sale venue.
A free barbecue breakfast will be offered on the Saturday morning with yearling inspections to follow at the sale venue.
On Saturday afternoon the Capricornia Yearling Sale Classic Race Day will take place at Callaghan Park, with the Sun Stud Select Yearling Parade to follow from 6pm onwards under lights in conjunction with a free barbecue dinner at the sale venue.
“The big news is that the Two and Three-Year-Old Classics carry a double QTIS bonus for eligible winners.
“If it’s a colt that wins, that works out to be $17,000 and if it’s a filly she’ll earn $25,500.”
Mr Leaver said in addition to the $64,000 first place prizemoney for the two-year-old race the total prizemoney pool is among the highest on offer for two-year-old QTIS horses on the northern provincial racing circuit.
