The Roma Picnics might be one of the classier events on the country racing calendar, but that doesn’t mean they don’t know how to let their hair down.
Back by popular demand at this year’s event in Roma on March 17 will be the Carlton and United Breweries Schooner Suit Races which will see young men and women put their speed and beer carrying abilities to the test for a chance to win 12 cartons of Great Northern.
The Schooner Suit Races were first hosted at the 2017 Roma Picnic Races and were last year rolled out to the Cairns Amateurs Racing Carnival and the famed Birdsville Races.
Competitors must dash 100 meters wearing a Carlton schooner suit and carrying a schooner of beer.
The first person over the line with some beer left in their glass takes the title.
Carlton and United Breweries business development manager, Brisbane/West, Matt Turner, said the fun event never failed to inject some larrikin into a sophisticated race meeting.
“This was a really fun way to end the Roma Picnics last year and I’m sure it will be popular again,” he said.
“Last year, with all the wet weather at the Birdsville Races, this was the only race we ran on the Saturday.
“It kept the crowd entertained while the boys were trying to get the track in order to race on the Sunday.”
The Schooner Suit Races, including heats, will be held after the final race at the Roma Picnics at Bassett Park on Saturday March 17.
