Whaka Feedlot to expand to 30,000 head

Whaka Feedlot gets approval to expand to 30,000 head

The Toowoomba Regional Council has handed out its second approval in two months for a major feedlot expansion.

The Toowoomba Regional Council has approved the expansion of the Morgan Pastoral Company’s, Whaka Feedlot, near Quinalow.

Approval was given at a special meeting by council last week for the Whaka Feedlot to expand from 8800 standard cattle units, to a maximum capacity of 30,360 SCU.

This is the second feedlot expansion to be approved by the TRC in the past two months.

In December last year council gave approval for Mort and Co’s Grassdale Feedlot near Dalby to increase to 70,000 SCU.

TRC’s Planning and Development Committee chair, Cr Chris Tait, said the increased capacity of the Whaka Feedlot was good for primary production.

“Feedlots create a local market for farmers on the Darling Downs who grow the grain and associated ration,” Cr Tait said.

Morgan Pastoral Company was unavailable for comment.
