LIFE in Winton will soon get a whole lot faster.
Telstra is currently undertaking a major upgrade of mobile services in the region in time for the upcoming Way Out West Festival on April 19-22.
Telstra area general manager Darren Clark said work was underway to significantly and permanently increase capacity to the iconic outback town’s mobile infrastructure.
“Our customers in Winton and across the nation are relying on mobile connectivity more than ever,” Mr Clark said.
“The explosion in applications, shift towards mobile video consumption and use of mobiles in business and agriculture means demand for connectivity continues to grow strongly.
“The upgrades we’re undertaking will effectively triple the mobile capacity in Winton, giving locals and visitors improved and more consistent data speeds.”

The Way Out West Fest and the opening of the new Waltzing Matilda Centre in April are expected to draw big crowds to Winton, increasing the demand for mobile capacity.
“As the first carrier to bring 4G mobile services to regional Australia, we know how important high-speed mobile internet can be to supporting local businesses, tourism and making regional centres great places to live,” Mr Clark said.
“We’re staying ahead of demand by increasing network capacity, which will allow us to continue to offer customers Australia’s largest and most reliable mobile network.
“This is in addition to the recently activated new mobile base station on the Landsborough Highway, between Winton and Cloncurry, under the Federal Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program and part of more than $17 million worth of mobile network investment Telstra is making in Western Queensland and the Darling Downs this financial year.”
Mr Clark said as a technology partner for the Way Out West Fest, Telstra was excited to be delivering mobile technology that would set the town up for the celebrations and in the long term.
