With a heatwave working its way across Queensland, temperatures are expected to rise above 40 degrees across most parts of north Queensland.
With temperatures in North West Queensland sky-rocketing, Birdsville has the potential to break the Australian record for the hottest day in September, today.
The hottest national September day recorded was at Roebuck in Western Australia in 2003 with a maximum temperature of 43.1 degrees.
The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts that Birdsville will only reach 43 today, but has potential to sneak over and break the record.

Other maximum temperatures in North West Queensland above 40 today include: Bedourie 42, Boulia 42, Winton 42, Julia Creek 41, Mount Isa 40, Camooweal 40 and Cloncurry 40.
