SHANNON Coombs, Meurl Plains, Rockhampton, spends his days at sale yards as a commission buyer – and he said it was time he put his money where his mouth is.
Mr Coombs took out the highest individual weight gain award from class 10 in the Central Queensland Carcase Classic.
Class 10 was a new addition to the competition this year, and was a feed on class of a pen of three steers, maximum four teeth, 300-420kg carcase weight.
The steers were fed at Duaringa Station Feedlot.
It was Mr Coombs’ Charbray steer who took out the title of the highest individual weight gain – with an impressive 3.17kg.
The steer scored 204.77 points.
He said the pen was one of “pretty handy Charbray steers”.

“I didn't get there for the weigh in but when they rung me I went in two days later and had a bit of a look, and I was pretty impressed - they looked really good.”
This is the first year Mr Coombs has entered a carcase competition, and said he found the experience very valuable.

Mr Coombs operates as part of a family operation with his mother, Carol, and brother, Leonard, where they focus mostly on trading cattle and backgrounding for live export.
They are currently running about 3000 head, plus cattle on feed.
“I thought since I'm at every sale, I should be able to pick a good beast,” he laughed.
Class ten was won by Boombah Cattle Co with Brangus-cross steers on 604.99 points. Mr Coombs came second with 599.55 points.
