Kerry and Michelle Sainsbury, Glen Eden, Kokotungo surprised everyone when they walked away from the Callide Dawson Beef Carcase Competition with two top prizes not commonly awarded together.
Not only did the couple take out the Most Successful Exhibitor prize but also the Encouragement Award.
Mr Sainsbury said the raft of awards, including the champion grassfed steer, was “a great result”.
“This is our first time in a carcase competition," he said.
“It’s great – we certainly didn’t expect it.”
The Sainsbury family run 120 cows and calves destined for the feedlot market with Brahman cows and Charolais bulls on 1200 hectares.
Mr Sainsbury said he had to be convinced to enter the competition.
“A mate of mine talked me into coming along, told me to throw some cattle in and see how we went,” he said.
They took six head and came home with two second places, the champion carcase and the two big prizes.
He now plans to compete again next year.
