Entries in almost all sections were way up at the Alpha Show last week, from cakes to working dog trials, as the event found itself the centre of attention for competitors from all parts of the state.
Over 50 keen young industry participants took part in the cattle junior judging, where plenty of prizes were given out.
Judge Jack Walker acknowledged the effort some very young people were going to, to take part in the youngest junior handler section, given that many were leading animals much larger than themselves, meaning they were often not able to keep eye contact with the judge.
The Queensland working cattle dog trial had 83 entries, from places as far afield as Dubbo, NSW, Pentland, Biloela, Dalby, Bundaberg, Winton, Longreach and Charters Towers.
Entrants raced against a clock set for six minutes as they guided three head of cattle through a number of obstacles.
An overpowering aroma of rum and roses greeted craft pavilion spectators, thanks to a table full of fruit and other cakes, and pretty flowers.
