Jolly Jumbuck Poll Merinos and Mt Ascot Merinos were the only two Queensland studs to exhibit sheep at this year’s Sydney Royal Show.
The two prefixes are owned by the Brumpton family, Mitchell with stud principle Nigel Brumpton reporting a successful showing for the local Poll Merino and Merino studs.
The Jolly Jumbuck Merino stud gained a Reserve Champion ribbon for their six-tooth medium wool August-shorn Poll Merino ram, Jolly Jumbuck Ross.
“The ram is actually named after the stud principle of Willandra Merinos – Ross Wells,” Mr Brumpton said with a laugh.
“It’s a pretty simple name because the quality ram is by Willandra The GP who is owned by Ross Wells.”
The Brumpton family were also happy to report another Reserve Champion win with six-tooth and over fine/medium wool August-shorn Poll Merino ram, Jolly Jumbuck Maximus.
“The ram was also sired by Willandra The GP and we are very pleased to achieve good placings against a line-up of stud Merino sheep from most States of Australia,” Mr Brumpton said.
“It was very strong competition at this year’s Sydney Royal Show and we are happy our stud sheep performed well.”
Jolly Jumbuck stud also placed first with their ewe in the August-shorn Poll Merino six-tooth medium wool ewe class.
“The ewe won Grand Champion Poll Ewe at Tara Show earlier this year and is sired by a Willandra Desmond ram,” he said.
The Brumpton family’s decision to enter exhibits in Sydney Royal Show comes after their success at last year’s Queensland State Sheep Show at Longreach where Mt Ascot Nikko won Ram of the Year and Supreme Exhibit of the Show.
“It’s only the second show of the year for us and all our sheep exhibited in Sydney will be going to the Queensland State Sheep Show at Charleville, plus local Roma, Mitchell and Cunnamulla agricultural shows as well,” Mr Brumpton said.
“Mt Ascot Merinos received ribbons in their classes at Sydney this year, but didn’t achieve placing at the Grand Champion levels.
“A highlight of the Sydney Show was Andrew and Patrick Davis, Demondrille Merinos, Harden, New South Wales taking home Grand Champion ram, ewe, and fleece of the show because I can’t think of another stud ever winning all three awards.”
Building on generations of sound genetic choice the Davis family took out the trifecta in fine/medium merino wool classes judged by Rod Miller, Glenpaen Merinos, Brimpaen, Victoria.
Judge Miller said the ram stood very correct with a great fleece and was one of the most complete sheep.
