Employing a motto of “have trap, will travel”, the Ilfracombe Clay Target Club continued its policy of holding its monthly members’ shoots in locations as far-flung as the Barcoo River south of Isisford, west of Longreach at Mt Victoria, and on Saturday to the Chandler family’s property east of Barcaldine.
A picturesque gorge setting provided testing conditions for those trying to sight black clays in front of a dark rock face but two competitors, David Fysh and Martin Hoolihan, were still able to shoot possibles, Martin in the single barrel and continental, and David in the single barrel.
Both enjoyed “pre-loved” scratchies for their efforts. Among the other unique food prizes were chunks of salami and slabs of chocolate.
Among the other surprises on the afternoon was the presence of Bevan Doyle and Ross McPherson, neither of whom had forgotten any of their shooting skills.
David Fysh claimed Ilfracombe’s finest crystal for the March monthly mug, and the overall prize on the day, dropping just five points.
A/AA’s best was Martin Hoolihan on 114/120, while in B grade it was Alan McPherson with 105/120.
Michael Schmidt won C grade on 105/120 while Dom Burden took out the novice with 83/120.
Bill, Julann and Annabel Chandler were complimented on their hospitality, and Ilfracombe’s new patron, Alan McPherson extended a warm invitation to all shooters for the Patron’s Shield to be held at Ilfracombe on April 8.
Beginning at 11am, the day will incorporate the mixed target Queensland championship and the central zone night double rise championship, and the club will be making 2016 presentations.
