The Huntington bloodlines and the thickness offered by Acton Kenilworth saw him sought after by an eager bunch of buyers at the Lambert stud bull sale at Blackall on Monday, but it was the Welsh Cattle Co at Taroom that eventually won the day, paying the top price of $12,000.
Waving the bid card on behalf of purchaser Matt Welsh, Elders Blackall branch manager Daven Vohland said the bull had come from a Huntington cow bred by the new owners, who knew and liked her progeny.
“The bull also had the highest eye muscle of all the bulls offered, and enough thickness to be used in the stud,” he said.
It was a move that was welcomed by stud principal Pat Bredhauer, who said it was also pleasing to see the top-priced Hereford going to new clients Dan and Christine Parker from Aramac.
They purchased Lambert Kapper for $8000, along with two other Hereford sires for $3000 and $3500, to put with their Brahman heifers for a softer animal.
“We usually have Charolais but thought these would be better with our heifers. We’re keen to give the Herefords a go,” Dan said.
Lambert Kapper is an 820kg bull with an EMA of 118cm and a scrotal circumference of 44.5cm.
Another new Hereford buyer operating at the sale was Andrew Maclean, Mt Maria, Morven, who selected six sires for his operation, including Lambert Koondoo, a 23-month-old bull weighing 820kg for $6000.
Tambo breeders were also keen volume Hereford buyers, with the Sanderson family at Wyanga purchasing five and the Glover family at Prospect also taking home five.
They included $6000 Lambert Kingaroy, weighing 744kg and with an EMA of 118cm.
Greg Glover said he was looking for fertility and calves he could grow out for the feeder market, and Lambert bulls were doing that well for him.
All 26 Charbrays offered were cleared, grossing $129,000 and averaging $4962, while 28 of the 35 Hereford bulls offered were snapped up, grossing $110,000 and averaging $3928.
Stud principal Pat Bredhauer said it had been a good result, considering the lack of breeders left in the region.
“There are not big cow numbers here at present; it doesn’t rain cows,” he said. “At least the rain has given us all a bit more confidence.”
