A QUALITY turnout in ring five on Friday saw 13 head of Square Meater stud cattle go head to head for the top gong.
Four well-known studs from across Queensland battled it out with Wondai stud Oakvale Square Meaters awarded grand champion bull in Oakvale Leroy Brown.
The champion bull by Woolaringa Doug and out of Oakvale Emerald Ghh, weighed in at 606kg and had an average daily weight gain of 1.09kg.
Exhibited by Gary and Heather Sewell, the judge described the young bull as having ‘great sire potential’.
“He’s carries himself very well for a bull of his size and has a great sirey head on him,” judge Graham Brown said.
Picking up awards for both junior and reserve champion female was Pencae stud’s Dr Meghan Scriven of Brisbane with Javid Flower and Javid Fiona respectively.
Grand champion female was awarded to the senior exhibit Vesco Joy To The World.
Exhibited Vesco Square Meaters Stud, Prenzlau, Vesco Joy To The World is by Vesco Fly The Flag ad out of Vesco Extra Special.
Mr Brown has judged the Square Meater breed previously at the Ekka and commented on the exceptional quality at this year’s show.
“I would like to congratulate all the exhibitors and I’m very happy with the cattle they have presented,” Mr Brown said.
“The breed is still trying to gain traction in the commercial industry and we can certainly look at the potential for the breed.”
