Big lines had buyers excited at today’s Roma store sale where quality weaners were hot on everyone’s agenda.
Bevan and Alison Doyle, Tumbar, Jericho, sold 896 Angus and Angus Charolais composite cross cattle as their annual turnoff of their steer portion.
Elders Blackall livestock agent Daven Vohland said although the market was continuing to slip each week, there was still strength where quality lines were concerned.
“There’s always safety in numbers. Here we have a consistent line of cattle- one brand, one line and they’re all vendor bred,” he said.
“The vendors have been selling in Roma for a number of years and they’re starting to see a lot of repeat business because the cattle are performing for people.”
The Tumbar steers averaged 309 kilograms and sold for an average of 303c/kg to return $936/head.
Mr Vohland said he expected the vendors would be satisfied with prices on the day.
“There’s no hiding from the fact the market isn’t as strong as it was but big runs of cattle in Roma tend to do well and there were also good numbers of bidders and buyers today,” he said.
“The season has been very good at Jericho and Tumbar has been experiencing good rain for a while.
“The steers look good. They’ve been running on buffel grass for a while but their other success is in their temperament- they’re quiet and that’s one thing buyers won’t go past.”
