Simone Sorensen and her family were among a number of fortunate people rejoicing at an unexpected downpour in the Winton region during the month. The heavens opened up, dumping 200mm in one fall at Teviot. They finished with 300mm all up. It was part of a rain influence that gave parts of the district their highest daily March total in years.
Properties including Rangelands, Oondooroo, Camara, Leeson and Teviot, to the north and west of Winton, woke up on Friday morning to the welcome sight of paddocks that had been turned into lakes.
The 101mm recorded at Winton last Thursday was their highest March daily total since 2000.
Incredible rainfall totals were replicated in areas such as Richmond (114mm), which recorded its highest daily March total since 2006, and Urandangi (90mm), which had its highest March daily total in 43 years.
For Julia Creek, its 104mm was its second-highest March daily total ever, while the 58mm at Birdsville was the highest daily total for any month in five years.
Despite the heavy rain in some parts of the north west late last week, Winton stock agent Jack Brodie said there were still plenty of places missing out in his area.
“We had four to five inches up towards Corfield, so we dodged the bullet of that heavy rain, but it’s very patchy east of here towards Muttaburra and south of Winton,” he said.
“Up towards Stamford is fairly dry as well – there’s green pick but no bulk feed.”
