PETER and Thumper Clark might have a raging drought happening at Leander, just west of Longreach, but they still grow prize-winning sheep.
The couple walked away with prizes for the grand champion fleece, and supreme team in the wether trial under their arms, just pipping Pat and Sue Hegarty from Colanya in both contests.
Their team of wethers had a combined value of $472.11.
The Longreach Pastoral College’s property, Manningham, had the team with the highest wool value, producing a combined total of $219.68 from their team of five.
The highest carcase value team trophy went to Peter and Mary McLellan at Smithfield.
They were also the heaviest team in the competition, registering an average body weight of 45kg.
Wool steward Greg Hunt had 58 fleeces to display. Also in the wool pavilion were three teams of flock sheep.
Head steward Allycia Bennett said getting them there had involved a fair bit of ringing up, but she felt it was important to keep promoting sheep at the show.
“If we bowed out it would be hard to motivate people to keep coming,” she said.
Powella showed the grand champion pen of ewes and the champion single ewe, while Ron Pether at Roseneath had the champion pen of lambs.
Honours in the cattle section went to the Longreach Pastoral College’s El Pascol Santa Gertrudis stud.
