A LIGHTWEIGHT Speckle Park/Charolais-cross carcase has won the prestigious Ken Crotty Trophy at the Royal Queensland Show.
The 221.4kg carcase was produced from a 396kg steer and won the 376-400kg division in the open led steer competition judged on Thursday. The carcase had a meat yield of 64.61 per cent, an 83sq cm eye muscle, an 8mm P8 and 5mm of fat at the rib.
The Ken Crotty Trophy is awarded to the top carcase from the steers in the Woolworths open led steer competition which was held on Thursday.
The steer and carcase was exhibited by the Beaumont family, Dorrigo, and Murray and Nicole Nicholls, Kyogle, NSW.
The carcase was also awarded the Australian Meat Industry Council's SSF Melrose OBE Memorial Trophy as the champion lightweight carcase.
The champion heavyweight carcase was the Limousin entry from the Sowden and Riley families which sold for $61/kg to the Eatons Hill Hotel on Thursday. Reserve heavyweight carcase was the Charolais from Holy Trinity School, Inverell, and Bob Callan.
The champion mediumweight carcase was the Limousin entry from St Joseph's High School, Aberdeen, NSW. Reserve mediumweight carcase was the Charolais from Travis Luscombe, Toowoomba.
Reserve champion lightweight carcase was the Angus entry from Ben Drain and Mitchell Lollback.
Dalby State High School Bunya Campus had the top junior steer carcase (Limousin-cross), ahead of Coonamble High School Bovine Appreciation Club (Limousin/Red Angus-cross), and St Joseph's Aberdeen and Coonamble High who shared third spot.
West Moreton Anglican College had the top junior heifer carcase (Limousin-cross), ahead of St Joseph's (Speckle Park-cross), and The Downfall Limousins.
The led steers were processed and judged at Nolan Meats in Gympie.
An Angus-cross entry from Mutdapilly Pastoral was named the champion carcase in the Woolworths trade competition. Reserve champion was an Angus/Charolais-cross from the Turner family.
Wayne and Lesley Davis, Livestock Pty Ltd, Barambah-Dale Charolais, Murgon, were won the Coles pen of three steers shield. The steers were processed and judged at ACC at Cannon Hill. Reserve champion was an Angus-cross entry from the Kroll family.
It was a clean sweep for David Bassingthwaighte, Roma, with his Santa Gertrudis entry in the John Sullivan Memorial pen of six pasture fed steers. The steers were processed and judged at JBS at Dinmore.
The Limousin breed was awarded the Ken McDonald Memorial Shield which is awarded on combined hoof and hooks points.
