THE Dalby ASH sale has become one of the top events for the breed, partly due to the incentive drafts, which have grown from $30,000 to an $80,000 prize pool in the past 10 years.
The open draft is worth $30,000, with the winner taking home $5000 and a $4000 trophy saddle, as well as another $1000 awarded for best heritage stock horse.

“The incentives encourage more people to come back to the event each year and creates a family atmosphere,” sale chairman Jim Ryan said.
A highlight of the competition is the feedlot challenge, a three-person team draft which has 20 entries this year.
“We normally take 10 team, but it’s become really popular because it creates competition between feedlots. It costs $1000 to enter a team, with half of the prize pool going to the first three placegetters and the other half to the preferred charity of the winning team.
“It’s a way for us to give back to the feedlots that supply cattle for the drafts, because without them, we can’t run the event.”
