A once-in-a-lifetime semen sale of eight record breaking sires raised $81,500 for the newly formed group, Qld Food Future, fighting for fairer vegetation management laws through their video, The True Story: From The Heart of Qld.
One off releases of both export and domestic packages of some of the nation’s and world’s best bulls were on offer at the Rocky Sports Club last night.
While there were some internet issues, that didn’t stop an exclusive domestic five straw package release of Wagyu bull, Mayura L0010, from topping at $5000/straw.
The semen, donated by Hewitt Pastoral Enterprises, Mt Rose, Taroom, was purchased by Richard and Dyan Hughes, Wentworth Cattle Co, Clermont.
The couple have been breeding Wagyus for almost 25 years and recently purchased a homozygous polled bull for $48,000 from the Wagyu Conference at Mackay.
Mayura L0010 was a half brother to the $185,000 record Wagyu bull, Poll Wagyu Midnight M0775, and Ms Hughes said the genetics he could bring to their poll herd had gained their interest.
“We don’t exactly have a plan because we were really supporting the cause as much as anything but it’s a win win,” she said.
“I say that the Wagyus are the new Angus because they have got fertility and meat quality and they are tropically adapted.
“We want to be a seedstock producer for the northern beef industry offering them polled Wagyus.”
Qld Food Future representative and Belyando producer Cameron Hewitt was behind the semen sale idea which became strongly supported.
He had no doubt the proceeds would help them keep the momentum going with their educational campaign.
“A lot of people have said to me, how did you create that sale with those genetics in such a short period of time?” he said.
“It was just the cause. The whole lot of the vendors, they couldn’t help enough.
“A lot of these people only bought these bulls last year and these lots are very valuable to them, they haven’t even got their first calves buy them.”
The strong prices continued with a 10 straw package of $160,000 Australian record Simmental bull, Woonallee Los Angeles, selling for $2100/straw to Buzzhollow Ranch, Texas.
Equal second price was achieved for last year’s Australian all breeds record bull, $325,000 NCC Justifed, selling for $2100/straw to the Donald Family, Elja Stud.
Santa bull, Waco Falcon, made $2000/straw for a five straw domestic and export package purchased by Dangarfield and Cree Santa Gertrudis Studs.
The $135,000 Droughtmaster bull Oasis Dundee was offered in a five straw domestic package by Mac and Gayle Shann, Cantaur Park, Clermont, and sold for $1250/straw to Ian Hewitt, Hanging Rock Station, Belyando.
In other results, Brahman bull Jomanda El Toro, reached $750/straw selling to Maru.
Ian Hewitt, Hanging Rock Station, Belyando, also purchased Brangus bull Telpara Hills Peterbuilt for $400/straw while two five straw packages of Hereford bull Injemira Anzac both sold to $100/straw to Boco Pastoral Company, Nimmitabel, NSW.
