The Pittsworth Show Society and Pittsworth State High School are working together in order to create a memorable attraction for the upcoming Pittsworth Show.
This year, the Pittsworth Show will be hosting a number of Calcutta style Yabby Races in order to help fund raise for the local High Schools Cattle Show Team.
A team of fine Thoroughbred Yabbies have been specially bred and sourced for the event with students assisting with their care up until show day. Local agricultural teacher, Jack Murphy, said it is a great way for multiple groups to benefit from community events. The students of Pittsworth State High are busy fundraising for the upcoming trip to ‘Beef 2018’ at Rockhampton in May, where they will be exhibiting their prize cattle at one of Australia’s largest cattle shows.
Reef for Beef races will be run throughout both days of the show with selected yabbies auctioned to punters, before watching them sprint their way to victory. “Half of the total prize pool will go to the owner of the first Yabby over the line, with the remaining half going directly to assist the students in their travel expenses,” Mr Murphy said.
The Pittsworth Show Society will be continuing to host all of its regular sections and entertainment on March 9 and 10, including a rodeo on Friday night and family friendly entertainment on Saturday.
Presently, the Show Society are looking for generous community businesses or individuals who would be interested in support this event, through the form of naming rights of the races. If interested, please contact Jack Murphy at jmurp310@eq.edu.au.
