Livestock Weekly Roundup
It has been good news this week with cattle prices improving across northern Australia.
But first, the feature Burnett All Breeds Steer Show and Sale at Biggenden attracted good entry numbers.
The Grand Champion Pen was won by Alan and Neil Goodland from Clare Grazing at Theodore.
The top pen sold to 282c/kg and weighing 490kg to return $1382/head during the Biggenden sale on Thursday.
The Queensland cattle market has very much all about the rain this week
Reacting fairly positively, Toowoomba cattle sale started the week with prices rising across the board. Light weight steers jumped 9 cents, selling to 352c/kg, heavy grown steers to processors reached 269c/kg.
The rain held yarding numbers back at Roma’s store sale. Cattle prices jumped 7c to 15c.kg across the board. Weaner steers hit 392c/kg, light heifers 338c/kg to average 275c/kg. Heavy feeder steers were up 6c and made to 279c/kg. Domestic feeder weight steers hit 313c and averaged 302c/kg.
Dalby yarded almost 5000 head as conditions started ‘to dry out’ enough to get cattle trucks moving. Heavy feeder steers reached 290c to average 282c/kg. Bullocks made to 282c/kg and averaged 273c/kg, while your fat cows topped 234c to average 229c/kg.
It was a bit of a different story for northern Queensland sales, numbers jumped to over 2000 head at Emerald’s sale, with much dry conditions prevailing across central Queensland compared to southern parts of the State. Light steers at the sale made to 329c and averaged 291c. Light heifers sold to 257c and averaged 242c/kg.
On international markets, the focus has been on the strengthening United States economy, which could result in a continuing decline of the $A and potentially improve Aussie beef’s competitiveness on international markets.
That’s the Livestock Weekly Roundup, I’ll catch you next week.
