THE State Government has announced it will spend more than $8 million rehabilitating two sections of road in the South Burnett following recent community lobbying.
The works are set to take place on a total of almost 10 kilometres on Chinchilla-Wondai Rd and Mundubbera-Durong Rd, with designs now underway.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the rehabilitation works would involved stabilising and strengthening the roads.
“On Mundubbera–Durong Road, staged rehabilitation will take place on a 6.8- kilometre section from Chinchilla–Wondai Road to just north of Shellytop Road intersection,” he said.
“On Chinchilla–Wondai Road, a 480-metre section through the Durong township will be rehabilitated along with a 2.395-kilometre section near Darr Creek.
“B-double regularly travel on both roads so rehabilitating them will ensure they are capable of handling heavier traffic well into the future.”
Mr Bailey said works would progressively take place from March and were expected to be completed by the end of the year, weather permitting.
Detailed design are also being completed for other potential upgrades along Mundubbera–Durong Road.
“Design is underway to widen a single-lane section of Mundubbera–Durong Road between the council boundary and Proston–Boondooma Road,” Mr Bailey said.
“Further north, design is also being completed to replace the John Peterson Bridge at the Boyne River near Mundubbera.
“This design work will ensure my department is in the best possible position to progress these projects when funding becomes available.”
It comes after local Darr Creek Oasis service station owner Peter Seiler launched a petition to fix the horror stretch with thousands of travellers pledging their support.
The Mundubbera to Jandowae Roads Working Group had also been lobbying for road improvements and welcomed the announcement.
Roads Working Group Chair and Deputy Chair of AgForce Qld Georgie Somerset said the outlined works were positive steps to rehabilitating the important linkage.
“Completing the design work on key areas of concern such as the John Peterson Bridge and the single-lane section of the Mundubbera Durong Road are a great start,’ she said.
