HOMETOWN hero Greg Hamilton will be one of the riders to watch at the New Year’s Eve Rodeo at Mitchell starting 6:30pm.
Hamilton hails from Mitchell and is a regular national finals qualifier in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.
He will face his toughest opposition at the December 31 rodeo from Warwick rider Michael Maher.
Last year, Hamilton recorded two third placings in the rounds of the Warwick Rodeo APRA National Finals.
Maher is the only cowboy to win three successive saddle bronc rides at the Mt Isa Rodeo and competed in this year’s national finals.
Hamilton’s sister Bec Hendriks is the rodeo committee secretary and said organisers hoped to make the New Year’s Eve Rodeo an annual event at Mitchell.
“We are hoping to attract a large crowd from the Mitchell and Roma areas for the night rodeo,” she said.
“There will be four events on the program at Mitchell, saddle bronc, bareback bronc and bull rides and a ladies barrel race.
“We are aiming for 10 or more riders in each event.”
Gill Brothers will travel from Upper Horton in New South Wales with the bucking stock for the rodeo at Mitchell.
The rodeo committee is organising entertainment for the children as part of the rodeo which will be held at the Mitchell RSL and Combined Sports Club Grounds.
