PRAWN farmers have welcomed an independent report into the effectiveness of biosecurity controls on uncooked prawn imports.
Australian Prawn Farmers Association president Matt West said the findings and recommendations in Inspector-General of Biosecurity, Dr Helen Scott-Orr’s independent review were a step in the right direction.
“We will use this information in our discussions with government and the department to inform the prawn risk review currently being undertaken,” Mr West said.
“But right now, our focus is business as usual by ensuring there are plenty of beautiful Australian prawns for Christmas and our people are working hard to deliver the usual top quality premium Australian prawns.
“Australian prawns are safe and healthy and with the added benefits of being high in protein, low in fat and have zero carbs what a great way to celebrate Christmas.”
Mr West said he loved hearing about the different and innovative Christmas prawn recipes that become family traditions.
“Personally I don’t think you can beat barbecue prawns with lime and an ice-cold beer as part of an easy Aussie Christmas lunch,” he said.
“We hope many Australians enjoy our healthy and tasty prawns this Christmas.”
