Much of Queensland can expect showers and storms at some point this week, thanks to two separate weather systems impacting the state.
During the first half of the week, the weather will be dominated by a ridge of high pressure that currently extends over eastern Queensland and is pushing a moist air mass into the interior of the state.
BOM senior forecaster, Sam Campbell, said that would produce showers and storms across much of Central and Western Queensland on Monday evening and Tuesday.
“Most of the activity today (Monday) and tomorrow (Tuesday) will be in western areas from Mt Isa to Birdsville with possibly severe storms in that area today and tomorrow,” he said.
From Wednesday, the focus will shift into the southern interior where most parts will have a medium to high chance of showers and storms.
Places like Roma, Charleville, St George, Thargomindah and Goondiwindi are expected to be impacted.
“It will be a bit hit and miss though,” Mr Campbell said.
“Some places might get a storm with in excess of 30mm but nearby could miss out altogether.”
On Friday a more significant trough system will begin to move from western Queensland to the east.
There will be an active band of showers and storms associated with this trough, which is likely to move off the coast on Sunday or Monday.
Mr Campbell said it was difficult to predict the likely rainfall with this event, given it was still some days away.
However, he said some storms could deliver in excess of 50mm.
A high pressure system in the Great Australian Bight will likely gradually extend a cooler, drier air mass into western Queensland during the weekend in the wake of the trough.
