I had the pleasure last week of attending the Bracken Ridge Tavern’s Champions Luncheon. Hosts Michael, Jenny and Ben White treated us to truly memorable afternoon.
I was sitting with old mates Angus Adnam and Kerry Lonergan discussing what unsung heroes the many hotels, restaurants and butchers are, that venture out to the Ekka each year to try to purchase some prize winning stock. Also at our table was my old mate Terry Nolan, Nolan’s Meats Gympie. Terry purchased the Lightweight Champion Led Steer for the White family for $11.10 kg liveweight and we enjoyed every bit of him at the lunch. Well done BRT.
Exhibiting a led steer at a regional or national show often ignites the passion for our beef industry in many of our youth. What an ideal vehicle to get our next generation to have hands on involvement in selecting the genetics, understanding the husbandry and animal welfare, learning about nutrition and showing the discipline to tend to their steers on a daily basis. Getting a champion and seeing it sell for top dollar, I am sure would only further flame that passion. Congratulations to the West Moreton Anglican College and Milford Pastoral who exhibited this champion. Thank you to Michael White for buying it and supporting them. It just goes to show what an important role agricultural shows play in linking our communities together.
We heard from guest speaker and legendary racehorse trainer Peter Moody who I hadn’t met before. After hearing his address one could only say, what a top bloke. He told us of his early days growing up in Wyandra, south west Queensland where horse riding ignited his passion to become a racehorse trainer. He spoke of the pressure in caring for the people’s champion, Black Caviar. Taking her to Royal Ascot, England and back on her way to a record 25 consecutive career wins. The best part about it for me was that the way told the story, just as he saw it without all the political correctness that pervades our society today.
What a great day, good people, good beef, good speaker no wonder they call it the Champions Luncheon.
