THE welcome rain reprieve wasn't the only thing that had vendors of the Rockhampton Brahman Week Sale smiling after a solid first day at the Gracemere saleyards on Monday. 

While the day saw lull periods boosted by high prices, in the end 269 of the 295 grey bulls sold for a 91 per cent clearance, a $9037 average and gross $2,431,000.

It was Carinya Hazelwood, offered by John Kirk and family, Carinya, Gayndah, who stole the thunder from the rain arrival when he sold for a top price of $115,0000 to Owen Scott, Ruan Grazing, Clermont. 

The 23-month-old horned son of NCC Sugarwood weighed 875kg with P8 and rib fat scans of 15/10, an eye muscle area of 132cm sq and a scrotal circumference of 37cm. 

Mr Kirk sold 23 bulls to average $23,934 including second top price of $70,000 for lot 181, Carinya Hayden, to Andrew and Anna McCamley, 2AM Brahmans, Dingo, and equal third top price with lot 195, Carinya Ironwood, selling for $60,000 to Robert and Mandy White, RM Pastoral, St Lawrence.

The third top price of $60,000 was matched by Peter and Joy Newman, Rathlyn N Brahman Stud, Emerald, with lot 123, Rathlyn N Holden, selling to Villawood Pastoral Pty Ltd, Biloela. 

Bulk buyer on the first day was Battlin Pastoral, Mallapunyah Springs Station, Tennant Creek who purchased 14 bulls averaging $4178.
