WITH a name like Oasis A Thurston it should have come as no surprise that the Droughtmaster bull from Adam Geddes, Rosels, Rockhampton, was going to have a strong performance at the Droughtmaster National Sale.
The 23-month-old polled AI son of Oasis Winchester was purchased by Munda Reds, Gingin, Western Australia, for $75,000 on Wednesday, the third top price of the sale.
Thurston weighed 836 kilograms with P8 and rib fat scores of 16/10, an eye muscle of 128 square centimetres and a scrotal circumference of 40 centimetres.
He was a half brother to the $135,000 top price bull, Oasis Dundee, sold by Adam's parents Noel and Robyn Geddes, with both bulls sharing the same father.
Adam said Thurston had always looked like a future sire right from a calf.
He said for Oasis Winchester to sire both the top and third price bull was impressive and showed the quality of cattle he could produce.
"That's just how consistent he is and what he is throwing for us,” he said.
He is now bound for Western Australia along with three other bulls Munda Reds purchased at the Droughtmaster sale and two from other Droughtmaster sales.
The truck will be filled with some precious cargo after purchasing the three other bulls from Hamadra, Huntly and Garthowen.
In total their four bulls averaged $38,000.
Munda Reds stud co-principal Mike Thompson said they were attracted to Thurston's bloodlines, length and depth, all the things that are important to every breeder.
Munda Reds had already purchased two bulls from Oasis last year and were pleased with the results that they returned for more of their genetics.
"Oasis have a lovely line of cattle and it's a consistent line,” Mr Thompson said.
"(Thurston) just ticked all the boxes.
"It just adds to what we have already got there (at Gingin), we have got a lot of good blood.
With their trip to Queensland already up to ten days by the conclusion of the sale, Mr Thompson said they wanted to spend their time wisely and buy quality cattle.
"We didn't come here to buy freaks, we came over here to buy off studs that produce the article year after year with consistency and reliability, that's what it is all about,” he said.
In total, Adam Geddes sold four bulls for the second top average of $32,500, just short of his parents who made $33,050 for their 10 bulls.
He said there would be more Oasis Winchester sons to come next year.
