The 2017 Royal Queensland Show showcased 131 fleeces from Queensland and NSW that met with the appraising eye of wool judge Robert Ellis, Ruralco Wool, Melbourne.
Achieving grand champion fleece of the show was a medium wool stud ram fleece weighing 12kg from Will and Narda Roberts, Victoria Downs Merino Stud, Morven, with a score of 94 points.
Grand champion flock fleece went to a super-fine flock fleece weighing 4.8kg from Michael Sweeny, Tallara, Walcha on 93.5 points.
Champion Queensland flock fleece went to a 7.2kg fine flock fleece exhibited by Moorindoora, Bollon on 93 points.
Wool Section steward Bruce Lines said it was mighty effort by the Bollon woolgrowers.
“It really shows the positive nature of Lyne and Phil King who have recently taken on the running of the family Merino enterprise from Lyne’s farther Ron Cameron,” he said.
“Many past exhibitors were among the ribbons as well with Mt Ascot Merino Stud, Mitchell, winning the fine stud ram fleece weighing 9.7kg with 93 points.”
Last year’s grand champion, Roselea Merino Stud, Muckadilla, won the medium stud ewe fleece weighing 9kg with 93 points.
The Bredhauer family, Lambert, Charleville, received second prizes in the fine and medium flock fleece sections.
Mr Lines said a special mention should also go to Jo and Peter Delahunty, Thornville, Winton for their win in the medium flock fleece section with a flock fleece weighing 12kg to score 92 points.
Queensland inter-district show section winners were first: Roma, second: Tara and third: Winton.
“Fleece nominations are up from last year and the quality, weight and yields from the exhibited show fleeces continuing to be outstanding,” Mr Lines said.
“The RNA Wool Section would like to thank all wool exhibitors and sponsors for their continued support towards the showcasing of our industry.”
