A STRONG but small exhibition of cattle was on show Friday at the Ekka with the Barambah and Emerald Shorthorn studs going head to head.
Amavale Masterplan, exhibited by Jeff and Annette Rose, Amavale Shorthorns, Barambah, was awarded Grand champion bull by New South Wales judge Matthew Spry, Gowrie, for his strong commercial traits.
“He is the most functional, long-bodied young bull and displays adequate carcase with a good, strong head, eyes and jaw,” Mr Spry said.
The 9-month-old Junior Champion bull weighed in at 425kg with an average daily gain of 1.48kg and an EMA of 74 sq cm with Mr Spry adding Amavale Masterplan was a credit to the breed and he looked forward to seeing what he could produce in future.
Grand Champion female was awarded to Royalla Princess Margie.
Exhibited by Lincoln and Lisa Job, Marellan Shorthorns, Emerald, the 15-month-old heifer, paraded by Lincoln’s brother and fellow Shorthorn breeder Nick Job, Royalla Shorthorn Stud, Yeoval.
“I bred her and it’s great to be able to have her here with my brother’s stud,” Nick said.
“She’s a very powerful, structurally correct, easy-doing female with a good temperament.
“Her volume and softness I think puts her above the rest – she has a rare combination of femininity with volume and power,” he said.
Nick said the young heifer would be joined post-Ekka and not shown again until she has calved.
