A newly created stud sale group has generously sponsored this year’s Queensland Country Life ‘Win a Pen of Santa Steers’ competition.
The Western Down Santa Gertrudis Group jumped at the chance to be involved with the competition and are holding their inaugural sale at Dalby Saleyards on September 16.
Four Santa Gertrudis studs are involved in the new Western Downs Santa Group multivendor stud sale with stud’s Glen Leigh, Deepwater, NSW, Warrillee, Boonah, Shannonbrook, Beaudesert and Hayleigh, Durong all preparing stud cattle for the sale.
Western Downs Santa Group spokesman Frank Ashman said it’s the first time a sale group has sponsored QCL’s ‘Win a Pen of Santa Steers’ competition.
“It’s a great opportunity for our Santa Gertrudis stud sale group to let people know about the new upcoming sale,” Mr Ashman said.
“Most of all we hope the fantastic Queensland Country Life competition raises as much money as possible for the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia.”
The ‘Win a Pen of Santa Steers’ competition will see the steers sold by Grant Dainel and Long (GDL) at Dalby Saleyards on September 6, free of commission charges, with one luckily Queensland Country Life reader winning half the proceeds and the other half donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
The steers are transported by Martin’s Stock Haulage and feed at the Morgan family’s Kurrawong Feedlot, Bowenville at no cost and all in support of the competition and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Kurrawong Feedlot manager Michael Green said the Santa Gertrudis steers have been on-fed for 67 days and will have a total of 100 days on-fed.
“The steers made a good transition from grass to grain and are currently eating around 15 kilograms of ration feed a day,” Mr Green said.
The Santa Gertrudis steers entered the Morgan family’s feedlot at 495kg.
Mr Ashman said the Western Downs Santa Group are enjoying working with the Morgan family’s Kurrawong Feedlot in preparing the steers for the competition.
“More than 90 quality Santa Gertrudis bulls plus several female lots will be offered at this year’s inaugural sale,” he said.
You can enter the ‘Win a Pen of Santa Steers’ competition by filling in a form in Queensland Country Life newspapers with entries closing August 31 and the winner announced before the steers are sold on September 6.
