People who drive down the wrong side of the road to gain access to fuel bowsers at the two service stations in Windorah will be a particular focus of police as the tourist season ramps up in the west.
Operation Papa Holdfast began on June 26 to maintain road safety as vehicle numbers increase in the south west in advance of a huge crowd at the Big Red Bash at Birdsville.
The approach to the bowsers has been problematic in the past and continues to be an issue, police say.
They say they will target traffic offences within the business area of Windorah to ensure a smooth flow of traffic through the township, as well as the “fatal five”:
- speeding
- drink and drug driving
- failure to wear a seat belt
- driving while fatigued
- distraction and inattention
