EKKA judges have begun the task of sniffing, swirling and tasting their way through more than 1600 Australian wines in a bid to discover the nation’s finest.
For the second year renowned winemaker David Bicknell is at the helm of the prestigious judging panel as chief judge for the first capital city wine show of the season.
The Royal Queensland Wine Show (RQWS) is the first to critically review the 2017 vintage in Australia, setting the benchmark for the industry.
The team of judges are tasting their way through the nation’s top drops over the next four days, judging on a criteria of appearance, aroma, body and finish.
The RQWS dates back to the very first Royal Queensland show in 1876, and has continued its tradition of recognising excellence and showcasing the nation’s diverse growing regions, the passionate winemakers and their outstanding wines.
Judging will be completed on Thursday, with the awards held on July 7 at the Brisbane Showgrounds.
Wine loving members of the public will also be able to taste the nation’s finest at the third annual ‘Grape Grazing by Night – Celebrating Australian Wine’ evening, a rare opportunity to sample the award-winning white, red and sparkling.
More than 650 wine enthusiasts attended last year’s event, which also showcased the award-winning beef, lamb and cheese the Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show unearthed earlier this year.
