HE may have missed out on the ‘flash flooding’ and heavy falls forecasters predicted last week but Peter Maunder, Burnside, Wallumbilla sure picked the right week for his annual weaner sell off to Roma on Tuesday.
Mr Maunder and his daughter Peta were on hand to watch their 47 EU accredited Santa, Hereford and Angus cross steers sell for 392c/kg averaging 268kg to return $1053/hd.
Starting off with Hereford genetics, Mr Maunder crossed Santas into his cattle until he achieved a solid red heifer and then crossed Angus bulls back over them.
He said 10 weeks ago their season was pretty tough but rain from Cyclone Debbie had turned things around.
“We have oats (20cm) high but it hasn’t quite got enough roots to put stock on it yet,” he said.
Neil and Lyn Cadzow, Alice Downs, Morven sold 121 Red Poll and Droughtmaster steers to for 409c/kg to average 208kg and return $854/hd.
Their 21 heifers sold for 279c/kg to average 295kg and return $825/hd.
The sale was a month earlier than usual for the couple who are battling a dry season on their 21,043 hectare property.
Mr Cadzow said it was just the start of their sales as they switch their focus to developing their herd of 3000 goats.
“We will sell down to the bare essential (cattle),” he said.
