Despite plenty of competition from a large number of Droughtmaster exhibits the Limousin breed came up trumps in Gympie Show’s stud cattle interbreed competition.
With the Droughtmaster Feature Show being held at Gympie this year, the breed section attracted 160 head of cattle entries. But, it seems quality reigned over quantity with the 21 head of Limousin cattle entries producing the winning Supreme Champion Cattle Exhibit of the Show.
Taking the top spot was a 36-month-old black Limousin cow called Oakwood Black Sable with a seven-month-old apricot bull calf at foot.
Oakwood Limousins stud owner Paul Forman, Bundaberg said the cow was campaigned as a junior heifer and achieved solid interbreed success.
She’s the new type of Limousin, not the sort you would have seen 10 years ago, with modern style and moderate frame but plenty of weight at 846 kilograms.

“We brought her back this year and this is her fifth grand championship win on the show circuit run this year,” Mr Forman said.
“At Roma Show the cow and calf won supreme exhibit and next week we’ll take the successful unit to Bundaberg Show.
Mr Forman added the champion cow is four months back in calf to a Canadian Limousin sire called Richmond Crusader.
“We’ll have to check her for age, but I’m hoping we can take the cow to Beef 2018,” Mr Forman said.
“She’s the new type of Limousin, not the sort you would have seen 10 years ago, with modern style and moderate frame but plenty of weight at 846 kilograms, which is great as a cow with her first calf.
“She has a lot of hip to pin length, good maternal traits and still maintaining the excellent Limousin carcase qualities.”
Other winners in the Gympie Show Interbreed Cattle Competition was the Droughtmaster junior bull, Farogan Valley Chief, who was awarded the Champion Opposite Sex trophy after a female won the supreme exhibit. The Farogan Valley Chief bull also won the Interbreed Junior Bull trophy and reserve champion went to Jen-Daview Lambrusca Limousin bull. The Interbreed Junior Female was awarded to the Droughtmaster heifer called Glenlands Vanetta and reserve interbreed heifer went to the Brahman called HH Park Miss Charlotte. Interbreed Senior Bull went to the Angus from Glenrea Pastoral called Bowenfels Bando’s Boy, while reserve was awarded to the Simmental bull called KBV Legacy. The Interbreed Senior Female went to the supreme champion Oakwood Black Sable Limousin cow and reserve champion was awarded to Glenrea Pastoral’s Bowenfels Judda Angus cow. The Interbreed Exhibitors Group was taken out by the Droughtmaster breed.
