Current and former Quilpie residents and their friends will come together in late April to take part in the centenary celebrations for the township which was established in 1917.
To celebrate the milestone, a vast and varied calendar of events have been scheduled to celebrate Quilpies’ rich history which will take place from Wednesday, April 26 to Sunday, April 30.
The Q100 Meet and Greet being held at the bowls club will get the ball rolling for the celebrations on Wednesday, with an easygoing evening of barbecue bowls.
Thursday will see the official opening of the Bulloo River Art, Sand & Mulga exhibition at the Quilpie Shire Gallery which will feature local indigenous history and stunning traditional indigenous art. This will be followed by the official opening of the Rail Museum to celebrate 100 years of rail presence in Quilpie.
On Thursday night, past and present Quilpie residents are invited to the Q100 Welcome Home Dinner and Celebrations which will mark the official opening of the centenary celebrations.
Events on Friday will begin with a polocrosse exhibition match taking place at Bulloo Park. Quilpie’s past treasures will later be uncovered with the opening of a time capsule that was placed in 1988, new material will be put in the capsule for future generations to discover in 25 years.
In the evening join your mates for dinner and a night of trivia at the golf club or head to John Waugh Park for the Sundowners Pukka & Camp Oven dinner.
On Saturday morning come and view the Q100 Street Parade in all its splendour as it proceeds down Quilpie’s main street featuring vintage vehicles, floats, trucks, cars and more.
Following the parade come to Bulloo Park and have a close up look at some of the fabulous vehicles from the parade at the vintage car display, and then make your way to John Waugh Park and watch the Quilpie Magpies in action during an exhibition footy match.
Later, don your evening finest for the Quilpie Centenary Ball being held at the Quilpie Shire Hall and hosted by The Quilpie Shire Council with live music by Rave On, dancing, supper and bar for what si sure to be a night to remember.
For the official conclusion of the celebrations all are welcome to the Q100 Farewell Breakfast at Lake Houdraman where you can say goodbye to old and new friends under the shade of the beautiful River Red Gum’s.
Guided tours of the town will also be held on Thursday and Friday morning departing from the Visitor Information Centre.
