Stud cattle and stock horses will be sold in the same catalogue for a new concept being trialled for the Kingaroy Female, Bull and Horse Sale being held at the Coolabunia Saleyards, Kingaroy from 11am on Friday, May 5.
Grant Daniel Long (GDL) Stud Stock Dalby’s Harvey Weyman-Jones said the idea to combine a stud cattle and horse sale came about by accident.
“There is demand for quality females in the region, but most producers are holding on to their excess breeders, so it has been difficult to get the numbers together to make a stand alone stud female sale at a reasonable cost.” Mr Weyman-Jones said.
“The Murray family from Yarrum Droughtmaster Stud at Inverell were looking to hold a herd reduction sale, and another client Quentin Szery was looking for a place to sell some of his ridden stock horses,” he said.
“As we didn’t have enough cattle or horses available to hold single sales for each we thought we’d combine the two.
“Both vendors were happy with the novel idea. There is a synergy between beef cattle horses.
“A lot of cattle work is still done on horseback, and recreational riders may also find a horse at the sale suitable for their needs, so we think the idea could hold appeal to quite a few people and it’s a concept we’ll consider building on for the future.”
The Yarrum Droughtmaster draft will include 31 females comprising 13 cows and calves, 13 PTIC cows and heifers and five unjoined heifers, along with six bulls comprising two stud sires and four two to three-year-old bulls.
After the Yarrum draft has concluded, 10 ridden stock horses comprising six geldings and four mares or fillies will be offered by Quentin Szery and and Lyn Caslick, Maidenwell, Don and Cherie Sivyer, Ogmore, P W & K M Radke, Wondai and Stephen Beddows, Murgon.
Cattle will be available to be inspected from 12 noon on Thursday 4th May 2017. All other inspections may be arranged by contacting the individual vendors and inspecting the cattle on property. Horses will be available to be inspected from 8am on Friday 5th May 2017.
Mr Weyman-Jones said hard copies of the sale catalogue have arrived and can be posted out from the GDL Dalby office or Aussie Land & Livestock Kingaroy or it can be viewed on the GDL Rural website.
