A COOL change couldn’t stop bidding from running hot at the Roma Store Sale this morning with light weight weaner steers breaking a sale record and reaching 464c/kg.
A total of 10,400 head were consigned to the weekly sale, up from recent weeks which have averaged yardings of about 6000 head.
Among the early highlights of the day, the Lunney family, Eurorel, Roma sold a pen of 31 Angus cross steers for 464c/kg.
The record breaking sale was a sweet reward for the family who have been battling dry conditions and were forced to send calves to the sale straight off the cows ahead of winter.
PJH selling agent Steven Goodhew said the market had opened up very strong and the large yarding of cattle included a lot of western vendors who had been missing rain.
Peter and Di Young, Myall, Roma sold 640 Angus and Brangus cross steers and heifers with an early pen of their steers reaching 434c/kg. The couple are no strangers to the Roma Saleyards and usually sell 1500-1600 weaners each year.
But Tuesday was their last sale before handing over the reigns of their property to their two daughters on July 1 so they can “semi-retire”.
“It’s pretty exciting for us all. It’s a bit sad...we have been there 38 years,” Di said.
