A one day clinic aimed at demonstrating the economic benefits of low stress stock handling and safety by design in stockyards, will be staged just outside Rockhampton in April.
Independent agent, Savage Barker and Backhouse, Rockhampton will stage the ‘SBB Low Stress Stockmanship Clinic’ with the presenter, Boyd Holden (Livestock Behavior Systems) at the old Nerimbera School, Rockhampton, on Wednesday, April 12 from 9am to 3pm.
Boyd Holden is a livestock handling and animal welfare consultant based on the Northern Rivers of NSW. He’s provided training and advisory services across all sectors of the red meat industry.
His expertise is in training people in livestock handling and developing problem solving systems. These systems have been taken up by the live export industry, meat processing sector and are internationally recognised for setting global standards.
Boyd has worked in Australia, South East Asia, Middle East Region, and Russia. As an experienced facilitator and Certificate IV qualified workplace trainer and assessor, Boyd is currently conducting training for MLA, NSW DPI, and MINTRAC.
His main aim is to achieve consistent handling and animal welfare procedures across the livestock industry.
Boyd’s knowledge extends from the farm gate to the point of slaughter. His extensive experience includes the transport of livestock, saleyards, feedlots, quarantine depots, abattoirs and live export; ships and port loadings in Australia to unloading livestock overseas.
He trains and handles the animals on foot, by horse, with dogs and helicopters. Boyd has worked with sheep, cattle, buffalo, goats, horses and dogs.
The purpose of the SBB Low Stress Stockmanship Clinic is to provide the principles of good stock handling and low stress concepts in a way that improves operator safety and minimises weight loss in cattle. In addition the organisers hope to improve producers understanding of their Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) compliancy and current animal welfare requirements.
Participants will also given updates from Workplace Health and Safety Qld and Meat Standards Australia on safety by design in livestock handling facilities and the importance of low stress handling on the eating quality of meat.
The cost of the day will be $88 per person while Meat Standards Australia has generously sponsored the BBQ lunch and refreshments.
