Toowoomba Hospital geriatrician and stroke physician Dr Nisal Gange will be guest speaker at the hospital’s next instalment of the Twilight Talks public lecture series.
Dr Gange’s presentation ‘Dementia – the Quiet Tsunami: prevention and therapeutic options’ will examine an increasingly prevalent health issue that touches many families.
“Dementia is quite a common problem, in fact around one-third of people 85 years or older will have some form of memory impairment,” Dr Gange said.
“However it is important to know that not all memory impairment is an indicator of dementia, so that’s one of the things I’ll talk about.
“The presentation will have an emphasis on prevention so we’ll also examine main causes and risk factors, and look at the lifestyle choices that people can make at a younger age to reduce the likelihood of dementia as they get older.
“Current treatment options will be discussed, and also research, including a look at the research we’re doing here at Toowoomba Hospital, so we would encourage anyone who would like to know more about dementia to come along.”
The free lecture will be held at the Toowoomba Hospital’s Unara Conference Centre, 6pm to 7pm, Tuesday 4 April.
Members of the public are welcome to attend. Bookings are not required. Complimentary parking is available and a light supper will be served. For more information please call 4616 5563.
