BEFORE she even entered the sale ring Christian and Jordan Brooks had mapped out their future plans for Hamadra Golden Girl.
Christian and Jordan with parents Matthew and Rebecca and brother Wesley purchased the unjoined heifer from Andrew, Kerri and Riley McKenzie, Hamadra Droughtmasters, Bluff for $15,000 to top the Droughtmaster National Female Sale in Gympie on Saturday.
Overall 115 females were sold of the 136 offered to see an 85 per cent clearance for an average of $2780 and a gross of $319,750.
The Brooks family only established their Droughtmaster stud late last year but have already boosted their herd to 20 heifers.
They purchased heifer at the 2016 Cream of the Crop sale and another five lots at the Gympie National Female Sale averaging $5500.
Their latest purchase, 15-month-old Hamadra Golden Girl, was sired by Wolfang 459 and out of Hamadra Design and is now set for the show ring.
Pursuing a Droughtmaster stud is quite a change for the Brooks family who previously had boer goats and commercial cattle on their 80 acre property.
“We have always loved them (Droughtmasters),” Rebecca said.
“Droughtmasters have always done well, (they) suit the property and the environment.
“We loved everything about this heifer...we had to have her.”
It was the first time Hamadra Droughtmasters had offered females at the National Sale with their 10 unjoined heifers averaging $5,250.
They were planning on attending the sale last year but due to dry conditions were unable to offer their female genetics.
Kerri McKenzie said it was great to give a new stud the advantage to build their herd with a heifer like Golden Girl.
“We will definitely continue (selling here),” she said.
“I’m glad that she has gone to a show home and someone is actually going to showcase her because if she stayed home that’s what she would have done.
“We believe that she will breed a bull...and you have got to give other studs an opportunity to purchase your best.”
The top priced Droughtmaster cow and calf was Bryvonlea Gracie offered by Brian and Yvonne Heck, Glastonbury and purchased for $5000 by Ken and Julie Thompson, True Blue Droughtmasters.
Top priced joined heifer was Breffni Imelda from the McCabe family, Chinchilla purchased for $4500 by Jim and Becky Farquhar, Calco Droughtmasters, Rolleston.
A sale highlight also included the sale of Farogan Valley Hope from Farogan Valley Droughtmasters, Upper Kandanga selling for $3000 to Mac Smith, Vale View M Droughtmasters, Manumbar with all proceeds of the sale donated to the Jake Garret Foundation.
Overall, volume buyers at the sale were River Junction, Gympie purchasing 18 head for $35,750 to average $1986. The Herbst Family, Mt Warren took home 12 head for $23,250 to average $1937.
