MUNDUBBERA producers Link and Tracy Davies pride themselves on being a family operation and it’s a decision from their 12-year-old son Matthew that they owe to helping them win the 2017 Burnett Livestock and Reality All Breeds Steer Sale in Biggenden on Thursday.
Link and Tracy, along with their children Matthew and Katie, operate a 1456 hectare property known as Boyne Lea, Mundubbera and 170 hectares in Bundaberg where they run Brangus and cross bred cattle.
While they usually sell their steers straight to the meatworks, they try to support the local sale where they can and entered a pen of Brangus steers in the sale which saw more than 2500 head yarded.
They won the Best Pen of Brangus or Brangus Infused Steers and went on to be named Champion Pen of the Sale by judges Noel and Elizabeth Cook, Kindon Station Feedlot, Goondiwindi and their feedlot manager Ben Fogg.
The steers sold to an average of 342.2c/kg at 422kg to return $1445/hd.
Link and Tracy said their children were at school instead of the sale but know doubt their son would be claiming credit for the win.
“We started (picking them out) a couple of days ago and the kids were all out there discussing which went where,” Tracy said.
“Our kids and family are a big part of what we do,” Link added.
“(Matthew) said to me, ‘You have to change that one steer Dad, I’m not happy with it Dad’.
“I changed it and I don’t know whether that’s what put us over the line but I guarantee when I tell him he will say it is.”
