Back in 2006 Moonie locals thought it’d be fun to hold a day of Yabbie Races.
The locals rallied together, dusting off their best outfits, catching the local prized yabbies, laying out the hay bales, and stocking up the fridges. Everyone invited their friends and family and started what is known as the Moonie Yabbie Races.
This year the W.O.L.F Moonie Yabbie Races has changed seasons, the event is now being held on the Saturday, March 4.
Experienced punters, racing syndicates and locals alike are all hoping this cool change will prove more favourable and race organizers are optimistic the milder conditions will see better racing performances.
The day starts with locals and far away friends coming together to form their own “syndicates” for the yabbie auctions. Before each race of the afternoon, the yabbies are displayed; their speed and talents analysed by the discerning crowds, and then individually auctioned off. Of course, some of the slower and more docile yabbies make for a bargain, but their true speed can never be assumed until the gun is fired.
While keen punters are discussing tactics, plenty of discussion has also been heard about guests 2016 House Rules winners Luke and Cody. The celebrities will be attending the pre-race Luncheon, escorting the Fashions on the Field entries, competing in the Austbrokers Dalby Footrace, and presenting the prizes, giving everyone plenty of opportunities to catch up with these guys throughout the day.
To join Luke and Cody at the pre-race luncheon and enjoy a cocktail style lunch and drinks before the gates open at 2pm, make sure you purchase your pre-booked tickets. For information regarding the luncheon click on the link.
If bidding for the prize yabbie is not for you, enjoy the Autumn Fashion parade, and shop the stalls hosted by Lisa Kennedy Collections, 4 Little Ones, First Past the Post and Lilac Apple, where you’ll be able to treat yourself or pick up the perfect gift.
Children will be kept amused, with free face painting, rides, helicopter lolly drop and footraces. The fun will continue into the night, as families gather and watch the spectacular Dalby Rural Supplies Fireworks show, and dance the night away, with live band ‘Special Guest’, provided by QMS Tuning & Maintenance.
It’s no surprise the day has become ‘the’ event on the Moonie social calendar, with people travelling from far and wide to attend the event.
With an action packed day, make sure to visit Moonie Yabbie Races website for all the program, raffles, competition and entertainment updates. Whether you are a punter, a fashion enthusiast or a family out for a day of fun, the W.O.L.F Moonie Yabbie Races is sure to cater for you.
