The journey from farmgate to dinner plate is one that is familiar to most farmers.
But for many living in urban areas and even our regional towns, the supply chains and production systems that underpin Queensland’s primary production can often be somewhat of a mystery.
Queensland Country Life is aiming to showcase Queensland’s best food producers through a new GrowQld initiative.
Food Heroes – Grow, Connect and Consume, will run from February to August in 2017 and will tell the stories of the people behind the food that ends up on dinner tables across the globe.
The initiative will feature seven farm walks and forums across Queensland and will maximise media exposure by harnessing Fairfax Media’s vast metropolitan and regional print, digital, broadcast and social media networks, including Brisbane’s Good Food month.
Queensland Country Life general manager, John Warlters said Food Heroes was all about reaching an audience wider than just farmers alone.
“There are so many good stories to tell about our food producers but these aren’t often reaching people outside agriculture,” he said.
“We have the ability to reach a whole new audience with this initiative and highlight how our producers go about putting food on millions of tables across the world every day. Our forums and farm walks will put a particular emphasis on the first class animal welfare and environmental standards that our best producers are renowned for.”
The initiative will kick off with the first of seven forums on February 10 at Australian Country Choice’s (ACC) Brindley Park Feedlot at Roma. Guests will be given a tour of the feedlot before joining a forum where a panel of beef experts will discuss issues facing their industry.
