Rockhampton Brangus sale success

Conducted over two days, the sale included one day of females and a day of bulls, all beginning after a commercial auction on Monday morning. 

Top priced bull for the sale was Bruce and Leanne Woodard’s Bonox 822, which sold for $50,000 to Gavin McKenzie, Tannyfoil, Blackwater. 

It was the 870kg 822 who impressed in the supplementary book, with an EMA of 132sq cm, a semen count of 85 pc, a scrotal circumference of 38cm, and P8 and rib fat scans of 12 and 8mm respectively.

The second top-priced bull was only one lot before Bonox 822, and also Mr and Mrs Woodard’s bull.

Bonox 809 sold for $40,000 to Valley View Brangus, New South Wales, over the phone. 

Weighing in at 860kg, 809 was also an impressive bull on paper as well as in the flesh, with an EMA of 132sq cm and a scrotal circumference of 43cm.

Mr McKenzie said 822 was his pick of the sale, and he knew he wanted to go home with the strong stud sire. 

Operating at Tannyfoil on 6100ha, as well as other properties, Mr McKenzie said the family run about 2800 breeders across both stud and commercial herds. 

He said he knew Mr Woodard was bringing 822 to the sale, and having seen him beforehand, Mr McKenzie said he was sure he was the sire he wanted for his stud herd.

“We saw him, we liked him and we got him,” he said. 

The bull was Mr McKenzie’s only purchase at the sale, and he said he was very happy with the sale overall. 

“It’s a lot better selling them for that price than buying them for that, but it’s what we thought we would have to pay,” he said. 

The top priced female was the Pearce family’s Telpara Hills Miss Foundation 468L7, an unjoined heifer, which sold for $41,000 to return clients Mal and Sue Burston, Broadlea Station, Nebo.

Telpara Hills did exceptionally well in the females with six lots grossing $133,000 for an average of $22,166. 

Also doing well in the females were DS and CA Roberts, who sold three lots for an average of $9666. 

Volume buyers for the female sale were Broadlea Grazing (three lots grossing $46,250, average $15,416), RL and WM Streeter (three lots grossing $10,500, average $3500), and Charlevue Cattle (three lots grossing $10,000, average $3333).   

The volume buyer of the bull sale was Hacon and Sons, Buckingham Station, Boulia, who bought seven bulls for a gross of $65,000, averaging $9285. 

Also buying big in the bulls was the Tindall family, Darr River Downs, Longreach, who went home with six bulls for an average of $5250.

Aspley Cattle Company, Capella, also left the sale with six bulls in tow, averaging $4333 for a gross of $26,000.

The vendor with the highest average of the sale (bulls and females combined) was Mr and Mrs Woodard, who sold four head for an average of $34,250. 

Other vendors with successful sales were RG and Na Hanson, who sold one bull for $32,000 while Telpara Hills sold 17 head for an average of $16,470.

Oaklands Brangus sold eight bulls at the sale for an average of $14,250, while Ryan Holzwart sold two head for an average of $13,000, Charlevue Cattle sold six lots for an average of $11,833, while Lunar Brangus sold 10 lots for an average of $9800.
